 Located in front of Yakushima Town Hall in Miyanoura, this facility, exhibiting a variety of artifacts, introduces the history of Yakushima Islander’s lifestyles from the Jomon Period (1000B.C.) to today.

Yakushima Town Municipal Yakusugi Museum

屋久杉自然館 ヤクスギ

 Located in Anbo,  this museum presents comprehensive information about Yakusugi ceders; the history of Yakusugi and lumbering, and the relation between Yakusugi and the islanders. Models and panels introduce, an detail, “domaiboku” (Stumps of cedar trees) and the crafts made of “domaiboku”.

Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center

さる 世界遺産センター

Located in Anbo, this facility highlights the profound character of the world heritage and natural environment in Yakushima, which you can appreciate through all five senses. Here visitors can also enjoy the sounds in Yakushima.

Yakushima Comprehensive Nature Park

さる 屋久島総合自然公園

The stream is clear at the middle course of Miyanoura River and lots of tree ferns and alocasia (a kind of herb) can be seen. The park also has a pathway and offers visitors a good opportunity to come in close touch with the natural environment of Yakushima. In the Nursery House, a variety of seeding taken from the wild, mainly of precious plants of Yakushima such as Yakushima rhododendrons and rhododendron quinque folium are raised.

Shakunage-no-mori Park
石楠花の森公園 とり

Growing in this park are 3,500 rhododendrons of 110 species, including Yakushima alpine roses, which indigenous to Yakushima. Strolling along pathway, visitors can enjoy the views of beautiful river and the grandeur of mountains of laurel forests.

Shitoko Gajumaru-en Banyan Garden

Banyan trees belong to the mulberry family of evergreens seen in tropical and subtropical regions. A great many aerial roots hang down from the branches of this strange-shaped tree, making it difficult to see which is the trunk and which the roots. Yakushima and neighboring Tanegashima islands are the northernmost natural limit for these trees.

Mt.Miyanoura-dake(1935m)

The highest peak in Kyushu, Yakushima rhododendrons grow profusely near its summit and put out beautiful flowers from the end of May to the beginning of June. Although a southerly island, snow accumulates on the mountain summit in winter. Mt. Miyanoura-dake and other mountains from a series of peaks, known as Oku-dake in the interior and Mae-dake down by the coast.

Senpiro-no-taki Waterfall

千尋の滝 さる

This distinctive waterfall, with a drop of 30 meters, flows from Tainoko River in the southern part of the island. On the lefthand side of the fall a huge slab of grantie can be seen.

Ohko-no-taki Waterfall

大川の滝

A waterfall with a fabulous spray of water dropping 88m. Chosen as one of Japan's top 100 falls, Yakushima's Ohko-no-taki and Senpiro-no-taki are both magnificent sights.

Nagata Inakahama Beach(sea-turtle's nesting site)

永田いなか浜 ウミガメの親子

This beautiful sandy beach is one of Japan's leading nesting site for sea turtles. Every year from May to July, large numbers of sea turtles come up onto the shore at night to lay eggs on this and other beaches.

Seibu Rindoh Forest Path

西部林道 <P>クリックするとしかと鳥の声が聞こえるよ

Lucidphyll Oak-Laurel Forests extend from the coastline to the steep slopes of the mountain ridges. If the visitor is lucky, Yaku monkeys and deer will appear in the mornings and evenings. Although dubbed a forest path, in fact it is now a prefectural road.

Yaku-sugi Cedar Land

ヤクスギ ヤクスギランド

 The Yakusugi Land is a natural forest for recreation at about 1,000 meters above sea level. There is a pathway through the lush Yakusugi forest along the mountain stream. Visitors can easily enter the virgin forest. Four tour courses, which take about 150 minutes (maximum), are available.

Features
This is a natural forest for recreation at 600-1,300 meters above sea level. The forest, with its scenic beauty, is a perfect sight-seeing place to easily observe pristine woods ranging from laurel to Yakusugi. Three tour courses, which take about 150 minutes (maximum) are available.
